Newnes Ruins Campground
North of Bathurst in the hills is some old gold mining areas we'd been told were worth an explore.
First stop was Newnes Ruins Campground. 200 kms from Sydney through the Wolgan Valley
In 1905 a oil shale refinery was set up closed down in the 1930's. Almost everything was removed leaving a huge open campground fringed by gums and dwarfed by surrounding cliffs.
To Do:
- There is plenty of wildlife that will come to you ie wallabies, kangaroos and wombats.
- The glow worm tunnel is not too far from the campsite but for small kids a drive is necessary. It's a 1 km walk from the carpark.
- Ruins walk is short and not far from camp.
- The old hotel is worth a look - would be great to have a beer from the bar here one day.
The views are spectacular at camp and we will come back here.
